Glossary of Poultry Terms

Bantam

A miniature chicken, about one-fourth the size of a regular-sized chicken.

 

Brood

(1) A Collective term for a batch of chicks

(2) To care for a batch of chicks

 

Broody

A mother hen

 

Coccidiosis

A parasitic protozoal infestation, usually occurring in damp, unclean housing.

 

Coccidiostat

A medication used to prevent chickens from getting Coccidiosis

 

Cockerel

A male chicken under one year old

 

Coop

The area which the chickens live

 

Crest

A puff or gathering of feathers on a chickens head, such as the Silkie, Polish or Houdan.

 

Crossbreed

The offspring of a hen and a rooster of two different breeds

 

Crumbles

Pellets, in crushed form.

 

 

 

 

Day Old

Technically a chick that is less than 24 hours old, but often breeders use this term for all their chicks under 7 days old.

 

Flock 

A group of chickens living together

 

Free Range

Chickens are able to roam at will.

 

Hen

 A female chickens

 

Molt

The annual shedding and renewing of a bird's feathers.

  

Pellet

Mash that has been compressed into small tubular/pellet shapes.

 

Purebred

The offspring of a hen and a rooster of the same breed

 

Pullet

A female chicken under one year old

 

Roost

The place where chickens spend the night; the act of resting on a roost; also called a Perch.

 

Rooster

A male chicken, sometimes called a Cock

 

Wattles

The two red flaps of flesh that dangle under a chicken's chin.
